I made an app for PC
I’ve been working for myself for nearly 3 years now, and continue to struggle against my biggest foes:
- A ruthless taskmaster who cracks his whip whenever I am not doing something (anything!)
- A succubus that convinces and compels me to drop what I’m doing and dive head-first into any side quest
- A petulant child who responds only with rebellion
Their names are me, myself, and I.
Needing to be productive is a state that served me well in the structure of school and work, but not as much anymore.
When you combine needing to do something (anything), and the compulsions to partake in side quests, you end up doing a lot of work of very little substance. If you struggle to regulate your behaviour like me, then you’d be in trouble.
‘Intentional’
‘Just follow the plan’ is easier said than done, so this is my solution.
‘Intentional’ improves the quality of my work by using AI to evaluate whether or not I’m on task.
Why?
My work is different every single day; fulfilling orders, talking to customers, building products, creating marketing content, accounts and finances, anything and everything. Most tasks are unfamiliar and require some kind of learning to proceed, meaning it’s really easy to get lost and end up in a rabbit hole.
How does it work?
It reads my ‘to-do’ list, then looks at what I’m doing, and evaluates whether I’m on task or not.
Why is that helpful?
Automation - automatic friendly reminders (or verbal abuse) to remind me to stick to the plan. Maybe an alarm that goes off, or a Nerf gun that blasts me
Data analytics - If you can track how well you’re working, you can objectively evaluate your performance changes over weeks, months, and years. If you have other personal metrics like sleep duration, exercise, and diet, then you can check for correlations and make better conclusions about what works and doesn’t
Report generation - Get a daily report of all the tasks I worked on, and how effective I was.
